Bats are often considered nuisance animals. Erica Maher and I decided to create a conversation around why bats are good to have around.
Our bat motel’s architecture follows recommendations for building attractive bat roosts, while the design on the front and sides is for our human viewers. We decided to use the play-on-words and reference to the American horror classic “Psycho” to acknowledge and create playfulness around people’s impression that bats are scary. Our lit-up motel logo reads “Bates Motel / No Vacancy” with the “es” in “Bates” only flickering, and the “No” darkened. The etching on the lower part of the front panel is a reference to the famous Route 66 logo, in which we replaced the “66″ with “Longitude -73.4″ as a tribute to those bats that migrate through our area (longitude -73.4) south for the winter. On the side is an etching of a QR code that leads to a Tumblr page (URL also etched) where people can find more information about bats and how to build a bat house.
